Political Correctness Gone Mad
Freddy Woo writes: "I once worked on an animation to help highlight the issues homeless people face in winter. The client was happy with the work, then a note came back that the ethnic mix of the characters were wrong. These were cartoon characters. They weren't meant to be ethnically anything, but we were forced to make one of them brown, at the cost of about 10k to the charity. This is how your donations are spent. Wisely as you can see."

Radio One Xtra
The "black" music station.
Surely music is either good or not (music taste is a personal thing) and should not be limited in audience by colour of skin?
I said that out loud once and was roundly tutted at and had was pretty much ignored for the rest of the day.
i still think it creates a division between listening groups and helps perpetuate a divide. And its our license money thats paid for it.

MOBO
It's the same with the Music of Black Origin awards. Given that so much music in the charts is written and performed by black artists, it's obvious that it's easily good enough and popular enough to be ranked alongside anyone else's music.
So what's the point?

I thought exactly the same re: MOBO
ah well, i'm off to apologise about slavery, despite the fact my ancestors were all farm labourers, not slave traders.

Too bloody right...
I've held the same arguemant for some time now regarding to MOBO's. I'm not against the people who run it or even the people who participate - it's the whole preposterous Idea of the thing.
I mean, if we play by their rules:
Blues would be considered 'Black' music predominantly and progressed to give us Rock 'n'Roll (which in turn gave us Rock). Rock influenced Heavy metal but you never see metal bands winning MOBO's do you? Surely they are eligable as their ORIGIN has stemmed from 'black' music. Oh no.
And in keeping with political correctness - when are they going to start the MOWO (Music of White origin) awards? Or the MOAO (Music of Asin origin) awards?
In true PC style, they should ALL be recognised or NONE of them should.
On a similar note, the whole 'Girl power' thing of the '90s annoyed me to the same extent. We'd never be allowed to label music as 'Man Power' as it would be seen to be promoting mens desire to be the dominant gender. Bring on sexual equality but make it EQUALITY (Not "we're just getting our own back for the hundreds of years of femal depression"). No, it's supposed to be EQUALITY.

thank f*ck
i thought it was just me.
MOWO just wouldn't be acceptable, and to be honest it would be james blunt and david "earnest" gray.
It would give Craig David a dilemma though - which one? Go for MOBO and possibly not win, MOWO and win every year for the rest of his life.
Good is Good. Bernie Taupin wrote good sings with Elton and no-one thought of a music of gay origin awards ceremony even though half of england are supposedly gay.
Celebrate differences but compete together.

Capitalism in action
The idea of "Black music" or "Urban music" isn't a PC invention, it's an invention of marketeers, keen to pigeonhole musical genres and segment the customer base into easily identifiable demographics. You can blame capitalism for this one, rather than government mandate.

re; MOBO's
I've thought that the concept is fundamentally racist since it first came to my attention.
I actually wondered about getting together the MOWO's or Honky Hits Awards tm. What's good for the goose...!
On second thoughts, the music would be insanely shit.

MrC...
Quite right but even if 'Man Power' was made up by them, they'd have a hard job getting it past the powers that be.
(Cock Rock doesn't count - That's not the same, I've met women with cocks)

My point is
that MASSIVE amounts of music are of black origin so why do they only recognise the ones that are currently prominantly socially popular with black 'yoof'? I.e Rap, Hip hop, R&B
(Which on another note IS NOT RHYTHM AND BLUES - STOP CALLING IT R&B. Give it it's own name or is it just like everything else associated with 'that' area of the industry where 'artists' just 'remix' what's gone before them?)
