* I have allocated for this person x quid to be spent on a gift.
* I cannot be bothered thinking of something to get them.
* I will give them money.


Rather get a two dollar box o' choccies, frankly.

Virtually EVERY Christmas (and birthdays too) the majority of my family, and Mr Box too, fail to engage ANY part of their imaginations to come up with a present.
yes, money IS great when you are skint, but surprise presents are infinitely better, because you at least get something to open on Christmas morning.

Is there any other gesture that says the following
1. we don’t know what you would like because we don’t really know YOU
2. We can't be arsed going to the trouble of going to the shops and looking for something that we think you might like, so writing a cheque is easier and therefore more preferable
3. We HAVE to get you something

Do I sound ungrateful? probably.
I don’t write myself cards from them, I draw the line there.

I have found that yes, people have sent me things that I would not have picked out for myself. I see this as a good thing, and gifts do get used, we were brought up not to be ungrateful and to appreciate what we had.
Right now, those slippers I got for a birthday 3 years ago have just been brought out and are being worn, despite them falling apart inside straightaway, and not being half as comfy as the last ones. THEY WILL NOT GO TO WASTE (that was the year when my only presents were old person things – slippers, a scarf, moisturiser. Not bitchin about the presents, cos they all got used, just the shift away from getting fun and silly presents to serious grownup ones)!!!

Don’t get me wrong, every Christmas, and birthday, without fail, I get asked what I want for a present. Now I’m not 8 years old anymore, so I don’t make lists for Santa anymore, in fact, I don’t make lists for presents at all.
If there is something I want, I would say, even though it feels a bit vulgar.

I went through a stage of donating all my Christmas money to a charity that had become known to me that year past, but then was met with certain people not wanting to give me money, to give away, wanting me to use the money/have something for myself.
Can’t win.
