My father was a teacher...
... and worked damned hard, including through most of the summer "holiday".

However, there are certain benefits which I think are easily overlooked.... for example, our daughter is not the most socially confident and we were discussing at parent's evening how to help. Teacher's suggestion was to have other kids round to tea, but then added:

"of course I understand that with both parents working it is difficult, but I always managed when my kids were this age".

It was diffcult not to say to that "But that's because you finish work at 3:30 the same time that schoolkids do. Those of us in the real world work to 6:30 and then have an hour's commute after. I'm lucky to be home by bedtime, how exactly do I host a teaparty?

I was a primary teacher.
I was doing 90 hours a week and moaned all the time. Solution? Different job. I work in the care sector now - a bit less money but technically have over doubled my hourly rate :-)
