Have you looked on the UCAS website recently?A big chunk of the degrees out there really aren't preparing people for any decent employment opportunities, so there is little to no economic return for those students.

AgreedI'm all for getting rid of perhaps half, or more, of the university courses that exist, and going back to on-the-job training and apprenticeships. Sorry, I didn't add the paragraph I was going to, which was blaming Blair for all of this. It was his 50% target of school-leavers going to university that's fucked the uni finances system.
