Although much derided, there was an actual story behind "leaves on the line" causing train delays.Leaves became laminated on to the rails by trains repeatedly running over them, making the tracks more slippery and hazardous. The speed limit on that stretch was reduced and as a result the rail traffic was slowed down, causing delays.
