I know the feelingBecause I did something very similar a while back.
I was walking around town with some of my friends, and a guy called Max was complaining that he never had any money (hardly surprising, as he has no job). However, it's fairly well known around here that Max's grandad is a millionaire. So one guy asked him "Max! Why don't you get you grandad to give you some money? He must be a tight git if he doesn't!"
Max looked rather downcast at this, and replied "Don't have a go at him, he's been having a hard time lately". Never one to miss a feed line I chipped in with "What happened? Did his pockets break?". Cue laughter. "Actually, he's got cancer". Cue silence. Deathly silence.
