many years ago, my dad was a bank manager
one of his junior clerks, a young lad named mark, was a bit useless. his head was constantly in the clouds and he told everyone that he was going to be a famous singer because he was in a group. my dad gave him a few chances, but got more and more irate with his ineffectiveness. finally he had to go.

the final conversation went along the lines of, "piss off and be a pop star".

12 months later, even my dad had heard of take that.

when they became famous, some of our family friends' kids were nagging their parents to see if uncle swipe would know take that. they were told not to be so stupid, he didn't know everyone in the north.

then "just seventeen" did a feature on mark owen, and just happened to publish a photograph of him in the old barclays bank football team. he was standing right next to my dad. everyone gets their 5 minutes. everyone gets to say "i told you so" to their parents, just once.
