There are downsides to the plan.I've never met anyone who had to take time off work after a gym bike accident. There are also many days during the year when cycling would be a cold, damp, miserable experience -- which hardly allowys for regular excersize. It's also probably not recommended that you listen to music or watch TV whilst cycling which, once you've visited the local routes a few times, means it becomes as dull as the gym anyhow.
FWIW I don't do either but every time I think of buying a bike I remeber cycling in my youth and the above and wonder whether it's worth it.
