The Hedgehog From Hell says: "I shared a house in England with a couple of Germans in 1999. I was watching Star Trek: Deep Space 9 on BBC2. One came into the room and saw Jadzia Dax on the screen and said 'Oh! Is she still alive? You're really far behind in this country.' What's been ruined for you, and how? Apart from QOTW, obviously"

I Will Always Love You as sung by Whitney Houston
Dolly Parton's original version has brought tears to my eyes at times. The song's basically an apology to someone in her life that she had let down badly.
Whitney's version makes my want to cry too, but for completely different reasons.

Indeed
Dolly's version - used in "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" but predating it - had heart and soul. Whitney's sounded like she was trying to shoplift the notes - just carrying them all over the place with no real plan of escape.

Yup
Whitney was a superb vocalist - the noises she could make were sublime.
However, she was one of the worst singers of all time - she sang I Will Always Love You as though she'd never read or understood the lyrics, accidentally turning a sweet little song about letting someone you love go when you realise you're not right for them into a huge power ballad about... well, fuck knows what Whitney thought it was about. Herself, I'd guess.
It is a sign of Dolly Parton's good grace (not to mention gratitude for all the millions in royalties) that she has never publicly criticised the ruination of her work.
