This does seem to be a totally unnecessary phenomenon that has recently appeared.
In the old days they would always give you plenty of warning and merely show the results on screen which were easily avoided by looking at the ceiling for 15 seconds.
I'd find it hard to believe that there were lots of complaints from blind or partially sighting football fans who were really keen to know the results but who didn't want to see MOTD.
