This is a question Stupid Colleagues

How do you solve a problem like Maria
It was no secret that Maria and I did not get on. I thought she was a thick as mud east end fish wife and she probably thought I was a stuck up posh git. She didn't get a good start to life hailing from a family who she proudly confessed to be, for the most part, illiterate and she was the off spring of cousins!!! Apparently she saw no problem with this and was convinced that it was a normal part of life to hump ones blood relatives.

Fantastic arguments included, but are not limited to:

Her informing me that there is only one type of average. Apparently the mode and median are entirely made up.

Her being 100% certain that there are only four dimensions, one of which was "feel". (She had gone to a "4D" cinema at the weekend)

The problem didn't lie with her lack of brain power it was simply willful and proud ignorance. Science was alien to her and University was a waste of time as "it never taught me nuffik tha I use in real life" so in that sense was actually a waste of time for her.

Sorry about the length but I really hate the willfully ignorant!

Only one type of average?
How mean of her!

She can't help it if she's common.

OH NOW HANG ON THERE!
she was thick AND common, i'll have you know. and the offspring of a perfectly legal union that has no genetic implications whatsoever. tsk.

No excuse for belligerence though.

The problem with her was not that she was common, it was the willful ignorance and the fact she would argue that time wasn't a dimension because the cinema told her. This was a woman who could take closer as gospel but write off science as a pack of lies.

That's a bit harsh.
There are only 3 physical dimensions, and any beyond that are in the realm of quantum physics, so not really common knowledge to the man in the street. 4D cinema experiences do tend to supplement the 3D screen image with tactile feedback so, in that sense, the fourth dimension would be feel (unless they've developed a time travelling cinema whilst I wasn't paying attention).

Was she really wilfully ignorant, or just not particularly knowledgeable in the field of mathematics?

Time
is not common knowledge? That explains why I can't operate my digital watch, then.
(, Wed 9 Mar 2011, 16:25, closed)
You will not be the one
to get me that time travelling cinema, will you?
(, Wed 9 Mar 2011, 17:56, closed)
Either you have been watching too much Doctor Who
or you think the mathematics of Minkowski is common knowledge. Even in relativity, time isn't treated as a dimension in the same sense that the three 'common' dimensions are.

But you can feel my fourth dimension anytime. If you know what I'm saying. Eh? Eh?
