who was a bit confused about sealife. He thought that dolphins were fish, which was fair enough - but he also thought that mermaids were real, but seahorses made up.

There are two species of fish of the Coryphaenidae family that are sometimes referred to as dolphins (Coryphaena hippurus and Coryphaena equiselis).
These are, of course, unrelated to the families Delphinidae (oceanic dolphins)and Platanistoidea (river dolphins); the mammals to which the generic term "Dolphin" is more commonly applied.
