This is a question Unusual talents

B3tans! Can you hum with your tongue? (Your Ginger Fuhrer can and he once demonstrated this to a producer on Blockbusters on the hope of getting on TV) Maybe you can bend your thumb in a really horrid way that makes it look broken. (Your Ginger Fuhrer's other special talent) What can you do? Extra points if you fancy demonstrating this with the odd pic or youtube vid.

Manly
I fitted an isolator valve to a cold water pipe and then replaced the syphon bit in my toilet cistern.

and I can put up shelves

Nah, manly is
...stripping out an old kitchen, totally reworking the plumbing and electrics, replastering the walls, designing and installing a new kitchen, then finishing by tiling and decorating. I would have done the gas, but that's illegal. And liable to explode.

Shelves? Pffft.

Not really an unusual talent, though

If you do it for a living
then it doesn't count, so nyah
(, Wed 24 Nov 2010, 12:19, closed)
Nope
Purely DIY skillz

DIY gas work isn't actually illegal... Would be a bit silly to have to call a gas fitter out to move your oven a few feet! Besides, explosions are pretty manly are they not?

I believe
that if your actions do indeed cause an explosion then you are liable for any damage and injury caused.
(, Wed 24 Nov 2010, 12:42, closed)

Indeed, but that's no different from any other form of DIY (i.e. plumbing work). Bill could be a bit higher though... Still, nobody with any significant assets (like a house) should be without civil liability insurance.

however
if you've been doing a bit of DIY gas work and something goes awry, then I very much doubt your insurer will pay out.

to your widow

They will, I checked the exclusions...
(, Wed 24 Nov 2010, 14:59, closed)
Huh. Well I stand corrected.
But I still don't fancy it... a leaking water pipe becomes obvious when you have wet feet; a leaking gas pipe becomes obvious during the post mortem...
(, Wed 24 Nov 2010, 13:25, closed)
I think
You can do DIY gas, but you need to get a proper gas fitter to inspect it all afterwards.

Same with leccy.
After an MP's relative got fried by a badly buried cable, they introduced Part P. Fit and then get it checked by a certified sparks, OR go on a local authority course so you can self-certify your own work on your own property.

They date cable now, so you can't just wing it. If the next occupier spots it, it then has to be rectified at your expense.

That's only true in England and Wales isn't it?
(, Wed 24 Nov 2010, 15:07, closed)

Its more scary than difficult to be honest. If you can make up a compression fitting on a water pipe, then you can do it on a gas pipe. Quick dab of soapy water to check the fitting and your done. Even then, the odourants that they put in the supply will be detectable long before a leak can become explosive. Take your time, read the regulations and you aren't going to kill yourself; there is a reason why gas explosions make the national news!

Having your work checked by a pro (first time at least) is a good idea, for confidence if nothing else.

Compression fittings for gas?
Well, your choice I guess...
EDIT:"Take your time, read the regulations and you aren't going to kill yourself" This has to take first prize for the most stupid thing I have ever read on the internet.

Have I mentioned my shed?.....

While you were doing that
I was shagging your wife.
(, Wed 24 Nov 2010, 15:36, closed)
she hadn't noticed
Your mum did though, she caught her cardigan on my bench-vice.
