Nah, manly is
...stripping out an old kitchen, totally reworking the plumbing and electrics, replastering the walls, designing and installing a new kitchen, then finishing by tiling and decorating. I would have done the gas, but that's illegal. And liable to explode.

DIY gas work isn't actually illegal... Would be a bit silly to have to call a gas fitter out to move your oven a few feet! Besides, explosions are pretty manly are they not?

that if your actions do indeed cause an explosion then you are liable for any damage and injury caused.

Indeed, but that's no different from any other form of DIY (i.e. plumbing work). Bill could be a bit higher though... Still, nobody with any significant assets (like a house) should be without civil liability insurance.

After an MP's relative got fried by a badly buried cable, they introduced Part P. Fit and then get it checked by a certified sparks, OR go on a local authority course so you can self-certify your own work on your own property.

They date cable now, so you can't just wing it. If the next occupier spots it, it then has to be rectified at your expense.

Its more scary than difficult to be honest. If you can make up a compression fitting on a water pipe, then you can do it on a gas pipe. Quick dab of soapy water to check the fitting and your done. Even then, the odourants that they put in the supply will be detectable long before a leak can become explosive. Take your time, read the regulations and you aren't going to kill yourself; there is a reason why gas explosions make the national news!

Having your work checked by a pro (first time at least) is a good idea, for confidence if nothing else.
