You just needed the public information films about how to build a fallout shelter, and the news reports showing concentric ring distances from cities vs expected instant death / lingering death / possible survival percentages.

I lived in a lingering death zone under the heathrow flightpath - I remember listening to EVERY aircraft coming over wondering if this was the one.
