Read my story similar and here in KiwiLand as well. Contracting market was fucked by labour - cheap asian immigrants, $30 an hour. Took lots of IT contacting jobs and drove down the rates.
Got a few mates in recruitment, worthwhile greasing them and they pointed me to a few opportunities. Tribes, Iwis and Runangas always looking for good IT people, permanent jobs in IT and expected to train the locals. Good for a year or two until things pick up.
Worth considering, I did 18 months in Whangarei with a Runanga, paid the bills and was very cruisy. Good luck
