...in some countries mean that this particular activity is met with the death penalty. These same countries also tend to have a high number of quite supersitious people.
Ergo, my guess (and it is just a guess) is this impromptu defence.
"No, officer, I am not homosexual - it was, erm, a ghost. Yes, a ghost. Nothing to see here, no lynchings required. Remember: ghost! Wooooooo! Ghost."
Implausible as it is, it doesn't even need to actually work very often to get in the news, at which point the noise made by the superstitious people actually makes it a better defense, and the whole thing snowballs.
