Turkish piss-takeDuring the Austrian-Turkish wars, a Viennese baker getting up early heard the sound of the city walls being undermined by the wily Turks. After alerting the troops, they managed to cave in the tunnel and the Turks fled in defeat. To celebrate, the baker designed a crescent shaped cake which was very popular, mostly because it was taking the piss out of the Turkish flag.
Some years later, a young Austrian princess called Marie Antoinette married into the French royal family, but after moving to Paris was very homesick. The royal bakers were called and she told them how to make a famous Austrian pastry, which they interpretted by adding more butter.
The French for Crescent is Croissant.
So that popular morning pastry is a Turkish piss-take.
