The answer to the question "What came first, the creature that lays eggs, or the creature that is birthed from an egg?" is more obvious and leads to the answer of the earlier question by making apparent that you do not require a chicken to lay the egg which hatches to produce a chicken.
[Having just read this back, it's clear that this is a poorly phrased response, which has failed to clarify anything. Ho hum.]
