1) search for "*.exe"
2) open a new, blank Word document
3) drag all the exe's into it - it creates shortcuts inside the doc
4) launch all your apps from there - one convenient location
5) refer to this Word doc as your desktop

When I was at school and the desktops were locked down so we couldn't create new icons, I created a shortcut to command.com and winfile.exe (this was Windows 3.1 days) in a word document. Instant admin access. (DOS/Win31 weren't known for their security features)

And being something of a geek I often assisted others in my IT class. Once they found out I could get passed the adminlock I got much school kudos by customising everyone's desktop under the guise of "Prof, how do I do XYZ again?"
