gargle with salt water
and eat toast and honey.

You might also want to try milk and honey drink.

/had 8 bouts of bacterial tonsillitis and quinsy before having tonsills out.

milk and honey is good
gargling with dissolvable aspirin also helps (if you're not allergic to it/taking anything else)

do you warm the milk so the honey dissolves?
it sounds vile, I hate milk as a drink, though maybe with honey it would be ok. I can't take aspirin though

yes
heat the milk up in a pan or in the nuker, then stir the honey in.

I used to get really bad, recurrent tonsillitis in my early 20s
and was about to have my tonsils out when it all stopped. I used to just use ibuprofen, salt water gargles and Soothers and that was enough. this time it's not helping. *mutter grumble*

get them removed
it's painful, but I felt about a million times better for it. I only realised quite how run down it was making me, when I recovered from the op and realised that for the first time in about a year I didn't have a sore throat.

my appointment to see about it
was shortly after it all suddenly cleared up (with a rather attractive Antonio Banderas-lookey-likey doctor, complete with accent who had my mum practically drooling) so the doctor wouldn't take them out. I wasn't keen on the idea anyway

The honey stuff is what I used
when I had something similar about a year ago, but it only really worked for me for 30 seconds after I used it, so ended up drinking it like tea.
