
20-20 hindsight: make a list of all the programs you have downloaded now, just in case your computer dies.
It takes AGES to re-download them all again should the worst happen... my computer just doesn't feel like home at all!

keep everything you download and dump them onto DVDs every now and then.

and also, HDD you can replace your Firefox 10.03.6.4.567 with 10.03.6.4.568 so you always have an up-to-date one. Unless you use DVD-RW, which is officially the work of Alchemists.

i'd rather keep my HDs tidy for other uses (ie audio recording, and mp3s)

is really useless for most purposes. And you dont' want to be accessing ancient HDDs too frequently or they die the death of dogs.
