Americans think "African-American" means "black", and that if you speak Spanish, you must be brown.
Variety got justifiably ribbed a few years ago when they called Anya Taylor-Joy a 'woman of color' because her first language is Spanish, despite her having 100% European ancestry and being literally the palest person who's ever lived.
