To some extent we've all been socialised with racism baked in,you can just read an old school history or geography book to see what used to be ordinary, normal, even revered views on other cultures, not to mention all the racist tropes in popular fiction.
A mistake people make is to assume they don't need to correct any of that obsolete/plain wrong information, and they resent people who rightly point out that yes they fucking well do.
