Tip Top!
TJ: Can someone talk to me about Linux? I wanna know if it is possible/worth it to convert my computer to it and how if so. I know nothing about it really and I cant seem to find a straight forward moron explanation of it!

don't bother
none of the applications you like will run on it, and it'll take 20 re-installs and 30 driver tweaks to get your keyboard to work properly
thne you'll need to get your mouse to work

Linux is good and easy to use. I have managed to get most of my apps running, only specialist stuff like Logic Audio doesn't work. Plus it's FREE.

Only worthwhile if you like tinkering and troubleshooting, and willing to invest a lot of time in figuring out how to do the most menial of tasks. (despite what the fanboys will try and tell you)
Pirate windows 2000 or XP instead, much easier.
If I had morals, I wouldn't recommend pirating, and would wax lyrical about how great linux is, as it's free.
However, if you want to give it a try, I recommend Ubuntu, it's relatively sane.

Then you realise that you can't get any decent software for it and it sucks.

if you need a basic office type machine linux will do it
games are unlikely to be able to work (without fuckon or 'paying' for the privelege on top of the price of the game)
photoshop probably won't work well enough
the gimp is a pile of crap
(and gimpshop.. that was a oneoff and.. no.. just.. no)
if you have a spare machine lying about stick something like ubuntu or suse(slower but seems to have more drivers) to see if you can bear it
the driver situation in linux can be a fuckon, tho everyone seems to have lost the plot with drivers now for any hardware over 1 year old with vista as well, you will have to research "does my thing work on this" either way
I'd say on balance stick with XP or 2K (tho I'd say xp) for now
If you couldn't give a shit about major applications and just want something for pissing about on the internet with, any major linux distro will do (driver issues notwithstanding) only hardware I have that won't work on linux is my lexmark printer, everyting else does

Ubuntu does have a very good driver set. I have installed it on a host of odd machines and not had any problems.
Photoshop wont work unless you spend a fuckload of time pissing around with config files. I got CS2 working just but it took hours.

on a proposal for our Headteacher to see what the benefits of moving to Open Source software would be. I'm going to be testing Ubuntu server in the next week. The plan is in one year my school will be completely Microsoft/RM free. Our support cost would drop about £25k a year, this is cash we don't have.

plus it means you can bin hard drives and cdroms from old machines completely so limiting user "fun" with them plus it extends the life of otherwise unusable for modern software machines
it will require a good server though
