Assisted dying, yes or no?
www.theguardian.com/society/2014/jul/13/assisted-dying-bill-lord-falcone

I'be been asked a few times by patients, but ethically bound to say no. Regardless of my personal belief. When did ethics get in your way?
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 10:53, 99 replies, latest was 10 years ago)
I think there should be some kind of legal framework for this, yes
I'd hate to spend years in agony if I could check out with no pain

Even if the quality of life was shit, the patient had limited time, and they wanted it?

(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 11:05, Reply)
Yes of course - I'd make sure they paid me up front, though - nothing would happen until the money had cleared.

(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 11:09, Reply)
Do they have to be sick? Not that it matters, if any of you lot need a little help just let me know.
Ethics got in my way when I wanted to take all my holiday with 6 months left of the year and work told me ethically they have a duty of care to make sure I have days available for the remainder of the year just in case.

What a load of fucking bollocks.
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 11:03, Reply)
Eh?
Is this written down? You have x hols to take in a year, not x/12 a month
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 11:10, Reply)
Its not that I had to take some each month.
It was that they didn't want me to work 6 months afterwards without taking a holiday day.

I wonder if there was a lot more assisted dying in the past,
Before every action of every doctor was scrutinised? I can imagine an old village doctor pumping a few sedatives in to a well known old man to stop him living for a few measly months in agony.
There ought to be a legal framework for it for sure, but I guess with serious injuries and disability there is going to be problems with gaining consent in a way that satisfies courts and such.
Tl:Dr, go go euthanasia!

(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 11:55, Reply)
My other half has this argument all the time.
We are the only species that take care of our elderly an invalid. They are also costly.
BURN THEM ALL
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 11:55, Reply)
No we're not.

(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 11:57, Reply)
I think elephants might too. They also grieve their dead.
You never see a downs Lion. Maybe a tiger.
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 12:03, Reply)
We're also the only species capable of self-awareness and compassion.

(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 11:57, Reply)
No we're not
My goldfish loves me and knows my name!
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 12:03, Reply)
Compassion maybe
But several animals have been proven self aware. Or did you mean both at the same time?
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 12:04, Reply)
I just mean that comparing us with animals is an invalid argument.

(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 12:06, Reply)
Not always
If you stop a "lesser" animal from suffering why shouldn't you stop a humans
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 12:11, Reply)
I don't see that as a counterpoint, it's human compassion that puts the animal down.
You won't catch an animal doing that for another animal.

The subject of doing it for humans versus animals is about the clash between that same compassion and the concept of the sanctity of human life. In both cases they're human attributes and the comparison with the animal kingdom is irrelevant.
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 12:14, Reply)
I'm not sure money is the issue here, at least, it's not something I consider when looking at the reasons for assisted suicide.
There are far more costly disabled and obese and other such people that we aren't talking about killing.
It should be about quality of life.
(, Mon 14 Jul 2014, 12:00, Reply)
I think the only argument is this.
Would people let their beloved pet suffer in pain, in which case why would you not do the same for a human...
