The 3 Rs
Reading, writing, and arithmetic.

It took me until I was in my 20's to understand that they were 'the 3 Rs' because of the phoneme at the beginning of each word and not the actual letter.

I was very, very confused as a child when people spoke of them.

When I taught EFL, I used to use
"PHOTI", and tell the kids how it's pronounced "fish"

That was fun.

Mind - teaching grateful, well-behaved foreign kids - ace.

PHOTI has the fractional disadvantage for Shaw's purposes
