Well if *you* don't know, who does?
Feathers are being ruffled in the world of semi-professional singing again this week. The chairwoman of the choir sent round an e-mail this week setting out all the rehearsal and concert dates from now until the end of the season, and saying that it was IMPERATIVE that EVERY MEMBER be present at EVERY SINGLE REHEARSAL (complete with bold capitals and erry'ting). Saying that she understood that emergencies and overriding obligations were part of life, but that nonetheless absences were INADMISSIBLE.
So I wrote back to her and everyone else, saying that sending that sort of lecturing e-mail to adults was absolutely unacceptable and that we were perfectly capable of appreciating the work done by the conductors and artistic directors even in work or a domestic emergency prevented us from being there at a given date. We don't get paid a red cent for the hours of work we put in learning and performing the music - only the conductors get a stipend, as far as I'm aware - so there's nothing to stop any of us going somewhere else if we're going to get treated like children. I might not even have bitten at all but this is the second time we've received a mail like this in under a year.
Friday's rehearsal is going to be FUN.

The whole thing's a joke, really. There are supposed to be two chapters of the same choir, based in two different but adjoining towns. My chapter is managed by a young and lovely guy who's full of ideas and absolutely devoted to making the musical project a success. The other chapter's managed by a gaggle of crusty old fossils who wouldn't know what musical oecumenism was if it shat on the bonnet of their car.

Y'know, outreach and liaising with other people who are doing the same thing that you are.
We sit next to them for an entire evening about once a month and we sing exactly the same music that they do, but they never make any attempt to socialise with us or give the impression that this is actually one over-arching musical project rather than forty people in a room, each doing their own thing.
