I'm sorry
but I have been stunned into cowering silence by the sheer tectonic power of your lore.
therefore I agree. a catapult. or a team of butterflies, harnessed...

decades ago I was given the Silmarillion, and upon reading the first page a spell of "Perhaps later" came upon me. it has never been lifted.

Well it does have that sort of effect
at first try I couldn't keep up with all the names and events being fired at me - but after re-reading LotR, The Hobbit plus watching the DVDs and of course coming across The Encyclopedia of Arda it started to make more sense.
There are however massive holes in Tolkien lore he himself often get's muddled and therefore the likes of Galadriel and Celeborn get's a very mixed up history from various version of their lineage and no definitive guide is ever given to which Elf race Celeborn belongs etc.
I'll shut up now.

"FUCKING LEMBAS AGAIN!"
I love the Silmarillion
but then I've also been known to read the Prose Edda and Mabinogion for fun, so my recommendation may not be the most reliable.
(I've also been known to read both Unfinished Tales and also quite a few of the History of Middle Earth books. Morgoth's Ring and War of the Jewels are the best of them, that's the stuff he culled the Silmarillion out of.)
(Fuck me I'm a nerd.)

I know, I know
as I was writing the Eagle reply I was thinking "This is completely Nerd on all levels" yet I could not help myself I'm like the Incredible Nerd - "Don't quote me, you wouldn't like me when I'm quoted!"
