# I dun a thing

Tried my hand at oils, wasn't happy with the result, so filtered the hell out of it!

This is beautiful.

# what does it look like without the filters?

# this
unfortunately, having filtered it, it just looks like you filtered a photo.
filters have their place, but look too filtery if applied to the whole image

# Ooh you liar! "never really done any painting before" indeed!!
If I might make a couple of suggestions...

Objects far away appear washed out. "desaturated" is the technical term. Put a little more white in your paint when doing distant objects. Conversely, objects up closer will usually seem brighter and more colourful. Objects far away have little detail but close ones have more. Your image looks a bit odd because the saturation isn't varied and all depth layers have a similar level of detail. You may also care to add some detail to the ground; the woman appears to be floating in front of a vertical grey surface at the moment :-)

Despite the advice, it's an awesome painting and I wish I had that level of skill. I'm limited to photo retouching and montage at the moment :)

I put your image through PS. I desaturated the bit of mountain at the back and brightened the woman and the flowerbed. Already I think there's a greater sense of depth to the picture. Hope you don't mind the critique!

# critique is most welcome
Thanks for the retouch. The floor was originally a kind of patchy stone work, but i didn't like it, so i scrubbed it out. Good thing about oils is i can leave it for a bit and come back to it fresh! I really do struggle to get any real detail into it as my hand is just not steady enough. It is really a fun learning experience though, as i hadn't picked up a paint brush since i was a kid at school.

Go on though, what does it look like unfiltered?
