Not sure we have any actual muslim apologists here so I'll add the standard response'Jihad' means struggle - it's about every muslim trying to do his or her best to live up to Allah's standards in their everyday life. It has nothing to do with bombing the fuck out of the infidels.

My corrollary to the previous statement would of course be:Strictly speaking, yeah that's what it means, except that no-one (muslim or non-muslim) has used the word "Jihad" to simply mean "struggle" in the past 50 years - whenever anyone uses it these days they mean "bombing the fuck out of the infidels".
