I've been playing with sculptris, do you know it?
It's like a free zbrush, though zbrush have bought it, hmm.

but if Zbrush has bought it then it won't be free for long, hmm.

Edit: Just Googled it looks lovely a totally freehand method of modeling, Blender also incorporates Sculpting Tools like these although more basic.

you can paint colours and bumpmaps too, although can't go back to sculpting once you've painted, there might be ways round that but I've not used it much yet.

Someone's working on something called unlimited clay for blender, which might end up being very similar.
