I'm hoping that one of the photographical b3tans sees this...
My dad has decided that he wants a zoom lens for his camera, but isn't sure what to get. His camera's a Canon DSL - he's vague on more than that - and he's basically after something that'll enable him to take photos of birds an' ting from a reasonable distance. His budget is about £300.

Any recommendations based on these admittedly vague parameters?

I'd say a 300 mm lens is good, but for 300 squid, probably a zoom lens. I've got a Sony rather than a Canon, so I couldn't help so much on that. Try this place: www.birdforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=292

If his camera body is fairly new and does OK images in high iso, I guess a zoom will be sufficient despite letting in a little less light.

Have a look at the "Tamron 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 AF Di-II LD Aspherical" lenses. Google product search lists the lens as £300 and under.

It's what I use on my Canon 50D, and it's only removed if I want to use my macro lens.
