/alien is far far superior, although to be fair, they're two completely different films in both set up and execution.

They're both brilliant in their own right.
Alien is a superb arty horror film. Aliens is a brilliant breeze of an action/horror war film.
Comparing effects, originality and acting I have to say I prefer the former, as much for its naturalism as anything. Aliens though I could watch again and again.
Designing concept art - Chris Foss, winning an oscar for all the set design monster design and the like: H.R. Giger. Plus it was the one good thing to come out of Dan O'Bannon's mental breakdown.
