I have an old laptop at home which is now pretty much dedicated to a downloaded version of Elite in all its wireframe glory and 8-bit aduio majesty.
It's not a particularly good laptop, but this must still count as one of the most overspecced bits of kit in the world!

Although running it on an anywhere near recent/decent 'puter means you've got to up your game... *considerably*, shall we say ;-)

it's obviously still being worked on but if you liked Elite II or III then it's a must-have. it really is basically Elite III with the bugs cleaned out and a new graphics engine.
I'm getting the urge to say fuck work and play Elite II for the rest of the day now :)
Edit: Christ, Oolite is looking good! It's a couple of years since I last looked at it and it was pretty good then but someone's been doing a lot of work on it.
