To me, it's like Tron Legacy in the way it's just pretty to look at (I quite liked that film too, but admittedly, the plot was wank). I think this whole first-person perspective film idea died a LONG time ago.
The hell of it is, a few examples of this 'sub-genre' always seem pretty interesting judging by the previews, concept, etc, but always fall flat on their face. Apollo 18 COULD have been good, but was quite disappointing to say the least.

I thought the creation turning on god thing was done quite well

it's a lot more grown up than the original and is well executed but really needs to be watched after the original

Like, what kind of programs are all of the denizens of the Grid? I can assume the club is some sort of media player and Daft Punk are mp3s, or something.
I think the main driving force behind this film is the special effects and soundtrack, which is AMAZING.

To see Jeff Bridges struggling to pronounce his lines through his false teeth kind of ruined it for me.

Which is why JJ Abrams and Co. have painted themselves in a corner with a prequel (as they had previously alluded to) as you couldn't possibily do the same stunt again and it would lose it's impact as you would know what was coming. In the original there are little clips (Easter-Eggs) that show a sub-plot of a Japanese Chemical Company who's satelite dish falls to Earth falling into the Atlantic Ocean, and is said to awaken the ancient monster who comes ashore at Cloverfields Manhatten.

Pisses all over Cloverfield with a big smelly Nordic cock.

I love the philosophy of the director too "If you have great monster models used them to the max!" (paraphrasing but that's pretty much what he said)
As soon as I can I'm so going to watch that and own it on DVD
