# I worked for a Japanese company
and was told on my first day that my promotion chances were zero because i was a woman. Then I was given a screwdriver and told to take the arms off my office chair, as only japanese dept. managers and above were allowed them. Funny lot.

# Yes,
I was based in the UK mainly, but travelled all over for them. A Japanese colleague I worked with daily once introduced me to his wife and child. 'This is my wife and child' he said. Actual names weren't deemed important.

# Is it me not able to grasp their traditions and/or culture, or is it still the dark ages over there?

# My experience
was that as individuals, on the whole they were respectful and friendly. As a collective, they were racist and sexist to a massive degree.

# Toyota San
In the 4 odd years I worked at that place, I learned one persons first name and he made me promise never to call him by it in the work place; it was disrespectful. I, however, as a lowly European woman was called Susan San. MY surname didn't rank high enough to be used, even though I was senior engineer.

# Perhaps it was lost in translation they had read a book about greeting new employees
and it stated "Pleased to be dis-arming when greeting new staff!"
