Mpeg is animated jpeg isn't it?It started off as mjpeg then they lost the j....
As far as I can recall it was "motion joint pictures expert group"....
I'm sure someone will wiki and prove me wrong, but I remember reading about it when they where developing the mpeg format.... This was of course well before divx was even born.
