But you're right, part of the reason we enjoy these films is because it's an unfamiliar world inside... well... you're looking at one right now. :)
I wonder what the inside of MY computer looks like...
It's a shame I couldn't go see it in 3D, but still, the detail in some of the mechanisms, like the lightcycle, is staggering.

Once in IMAX 3d on the opening day, once in 3d at a regular cinema, and once in 2d. I actually enjoyed the 2d showing the most!

Much like most 3D films, you get a bit of depth and that's about it. Nothing came flying out at you.
Filmmakers say they don't want to turn 3D into a gimmick by making things fly out at you but the only reason kids got excited about 3D when I was young was BECAUSE things would fly out at you. Marty McFly wouldn't have ducked in BTTF3 if all it did was give Jaws "depth"
/3D rant

And yeah, all it does is give you a little bit of depth, a bit like the 3DS does.
I think there was a film called 'Mars Needs Moms' that came out sometime last year, which was banking on its 3D effect. It became the fifth worst commercial failure in cinema history.
I can see the 3D fad dying out soon, there's no point to it, other than to give you a bit of a headache afterwards.

i've not seen a 3D film that has blown me away and left me thinking that it is the next big thing in cinema.
i was more impressed with the size and sound of IMAX, but you have to get the right seat in an IMAX cinema, in my opinion.
