I like that he manages to save himself this time.
TJ: Could someone tell me an easy and effective way of turning a bit of footage (e.g. off Youtube or a DVD) into a set of frames for a gif? I've tried doing it with the pause button and lots of prnt scrns but this seems rather time consuming and the result isn't always smooth. Surely there's some bit of software or something that will do all this for me. Thanks.

in photoshop there's an 'import video frames as layers' thing that'll let you import a video, complete with predone animation
edit: obviously you'd have to download the video first, i use a firefox extension called download helper

It's free, though you get a watermark which can be cropped out.
I use GifSoup and GifMovieGear, simple and quick, like a greased up retard.

as long as said video owner has allowed embedding.
GifMovieGear is the bestest for gif gubbins.

the incredibly long-winded way that I use on my antiquated Mac with antiquated software is:
grab my YouTube video as an .flv (double click the largest filesize entry in the Activity window in Safari) and skip through frames in QuickTime player using the right arrow key, screenshotting with Apple-Shift-3 as I go. Then dump all of the screenshot files into one folder, in ImageReady use Import Folder As Frames, and crop my canvas size down so it only includes the playback window :|

this can download any youtube video (the full filename not the truncated version) and save it as an MPEG (doesn't work with AVI for some reason)
Then I use Jasc Animation Shop to convert the clip to a GIF. If it's a long piece of footage then I open it in 1000 frame sections, then cut it right down from there
