If something is called an app, what are you supposed to call it to avoid being a knobhead?

there's no way of avoiding being a knobhead, according to the Cartesian logic you've APPlied there.
edit: an application

Applications were still abbreviated to 'app' before the rise of the 'App Store'.
E.g. in the phrase 'killer app' which was first coined on VisiCalc for the Apple II, meaning the phrase is older than I am.
It's certainly been popularised but the meaning hasn't changed.
If you can't converse with someone without showing them the latest 'app' on your phone then yes, you're officially a cocksnorkel or at worst a total cunt.

Thanks for the information. I didn't know that about its origins - re: "killer app", but I did suspect Apple (MacKintosh) might have something to do with it. I don't think it really matters nearly as much as I seem to have made it appear I think it does. If use of this terminology helps real people have actual conversations with each other then, great! I couldn't possibly accuse other people of being knobheads anyway, as I have to look in the mirror once in a while.
