when we were little we laughed at and enjoyed the same comedy characters in each film - the gay gold robot in Ep4, the funny green muppet voiced by Fozzy Bear in Empire and the teddy bears in the forest in Jedi.
Star Wars has always had clown characters, you can't dismiss Jar Jar without pointing out how fucking stupid Yoda was in Empire fighting a tin can for a sausage in the middle of a swamp.

bad though they were, the new three added a depth of politics and background that the original three were lacking.
