It's just shorthand.Instead of 'the jimmy savile record-breaking amounts of child abuse scandal' it's easier to say 'jimgate'. Not that anyone does yet.
More importantly, it annoys other people who have nothing better to do with their time than point out that the watergate scandal was in no way related to water. Just in case I didn't already know.
