Though from a prehistoric standpoint, religion was one of the key factors in creating positions of power, hierarchies and thus embryonic civilisations. That said, we could probably do without it now.

From a sociological standpoint, people are very good at creating 'us and them' definitions. Even if religion is done away with, I imagine humans will continue to find other categories with which to form prejudices against each other.
