but that's my own pref, I want to learn by eye not via a gadget that tells me where to put my paint and what value/colour. I don't see the point myself.

and I'd stick with doing your own thing. If it looks right to you, it's right. If it doesn't, it isn't. None of us could ever tell you that.

I always concentrate on the eyes, get them right and the rest falls into place. Start light and build layers too.

with this one I tried getting the values first and built from that. Eyes are the hardest though with the self portraits, as you keep moving the head. I need a neck clamp or something! XD
