# first attempt at colourising a black and white pic:
(, Tue 28 Oct 2014, 10:08, archived)
# very nice
if you want to make it look even more natural use lots of subtle shades for each colour, so the doors would be 3 or 4 nearly identical greens and the skin would be far more hints of blue, red, yellow, orange. Also consider colour bounce (there would be a hint of the greeny door colour reflecting on to the brown carpet and vice versa) and throw in some extra colour from the lighting (a yellow tinge from a lightbulb for example) and any strong colour sources that might be out of shot.

# dassright! you a smart muthafucka!

Yeah, but seriously, I started to notice the surrounding color thing when I was photoshopping a few images, and realized what a major impact it has on whether or not something looks 'shopped'

# doing 3d teaches you wonderful things about the way we see light bounce off things
I see the world in Diffuse, Specular, Gloss, Ambient, Reflective and translucent passes, it's probably why I have so many headaches.

# Luckily,
Those are all also kinds of delicious Milk Shake*

Actually, they may not be.
/edit: And I can only apologise for the frankly abysmal sentence construction above.

# cheers for the pointers.
First attempt wasn't too bad, gonna work on it as its quite satisfying almost bringing a picture back to life.

# very nice!
I might have to try this on a few images I've played around with before, but using HappyToast's suggestions.

# If you want to really make the skin work take some colour cues from Jenny Saville or Lucian Freud's portraits
don't be afraid to put some green and blue in

# A friend did me up as a naughty nurse one Halloween.
She used some green as part of the makeup foundation. At first I was puzzled, but the result was as convincing as possible for my face structure.
It was fun watching the look on young men's faces when I would reject their offers for a dance in my natural voice.

# ever tried it on a colour image to see how well you do?
I mean, get a colour image, turn it to grayscale, colourise it and then compare to the original

# No, but that might be a good exercise
