
The RAF wanted to try them, but not with the superchargers or counter rotating propellers. Which was a bit like wanting a Ferrari but insisting on a 1.0 litre engine to save a few quid.

counter rotating props mean two sets of spare engines and many parts? I can see that logistically that would be a problem. You can't just make an engine run backwards.

I think the point was that the P38 was designed with superchargers and counter rotating props. The RAF insisted on a version with those features removed and found it wanting, cancelling their order. The U.S. then had considerable success with it as designed.
