I think it was good idea
the original people are old / moved on / dead.
And swapping the gender gave them the chance to make something new without the cast being directly compared to the original.
However the end result was a bit so-so.

They could easily have gone with, say, the plot of the Ghostbusters RPG - a group who's bought a Ghostbusters, Inc. franchise, set it in another city (or even another country) and have a brand new plot. Instead they just did a find/replace (name) on the old script. Of course people were going to compare it to the original.
And both Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd appeared in it so they hadn't moved on that much. Akyroyd would even welcome a Ghostbusters III, apparently.
