Ms Delerium: you can go to a Bureau de Change (some post offices, thomas cooks, etc) and they'll convert it into GBP for you. They may charge a comission, and they most definitely will stiff you on the conversion rate.

Personally, I would just return the cash to the muppet ebayer in question and get them to send you a sterling bank draft / international postal order.
