and my understanding is that you don't actually have to do anything (other than create the piece in the first place.) feel free to slather ©opyright notices all over it if it makes you feel happier.

on any creative things you make - it is simply a case of being able to prove you came up with it in the first place.
Suggested ways to do this are:
1) Leave a copy of it with a solicitor - it costs money but will definately stand up in court.
2) Leave a copy in a safety deposit box in a bank - many banks do this for free if you are an existing customer.
3) Post a copy to yourself registered post, then don't open it - the postmark should act as proof of the date. Not foolproof though.
Of course, if you are talking about b3ta stuff then you probably have foregone any rights to copyrite ownership if you stole somebody else's picture as your source.
