technically i think that would be a 2D thingie...
as it appears to be a rendered 2D plane spinning in 3D space... i could be wrong though

but it is RENDERED
which is typically what you do to output an image like that, so i suppose we are both correct in that sense.

I used 3dsMAX
and its marvellous feature that allows rendering to a series of Tiff files- each with its own alpha channel allowing for easy background removal.
